Open Letter to All Politicians – From a United States Citizen
I have just about had enough!
It infuriates me when we refer to our elected officials as “leaders” when so far since I came of voting age, I have yet to see a politician who cares more for his constituents and his fellow citizens than he or she cares for himself. In my book, that is not a leader.
The governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, is the latest addition to my growing list of political disappointments. When are these idiots going to realize that they do not serve their own self interests when they are elected into office? America is the land of the Free — Freedom of Expression, Freedom of Life, Freedom of Liberty, Freedom of the Pursuit of Happiness — but elected officials who are placed in office, serve an even greater purpose. Their responsibility is to look beyond their own ambitions and pursuits, and to represent, secure and protect, the ambitions and pursuits of someone greater than themselves — We, The People!
When are these politicians going to pull their collective heads out of their own asses and realize that they represent the mightiest people on the face of this planet?!? Whereas man is God’s greatest creation, the United States of America is man’s greatest creation! And I want these politicians to know, deep in their soul, that no matter what level of office they hold, their most precious position and greatest honor is that they represent other Americans. They do not, and cannot, be allowed to serve only their own self interests. They represent a greater purpose — We, The People!
I am a married man, and I am a father, a brother, an uncle, and a son. I have family all around me. I also have my own hopes and dreams, goals and ambitions. I am no different than any one of you. But just like the Founding Fathers, who put their entire lives, fortunes, families, hopes and dreams aside in order to stand up against a government that failed to serve them, I expect our elected officials to put aside their own self interests in the service of those who placed them in office — We, The People.
I’m sick and tired of career politicians that serve no greater interest than their own by remaining in office. What purpose does it serve for the same politician to remain in office for term after term. Is he or she more in tune with their constituency by sitting in his or her office for years on end? Or would it serve others greater by electing a new representative with new experiences, new ideas, and fresh perspectives? How is it possible to pursue one’s personal political goals and at the same time, effectively represent the will of We, The People?
And this is another point I want to drive home. No matter what level of office a politician holds, from school board member to the office of the president, they all represent three things — (1) The people who elected them to that office by voting for them (2) The people who live in their districts and constituents even if they didn’t vote for them and (3) The American People and the self-governing form of government which is the core foundation of the United States of America! Those three things can be summed up in three simple words, the three most important words in the history of mankind since the Word of God was first spoken by mortal man:
We, The People.
